Uncertain. Supposedly from an Ancient Greek source, if not of Pre-Greek origin. Likely derived from an earlier *tumpa; maybe related to Ancient Greek τῠ́πτω (tŭ́ptō, “to strike, beat, smite”) and to τύμπανον (túmpanon, “drum”). Technically not related to Ancient Greek τύμβος (túmbos) nor Late Latin tumba.
