twin prime (plural twin primes)
- (mathematics) Either of a pair of prime numbers that differ by two.
- 2015 July 24, Gareth Cook, “The Singular Mind of Terry Tao”, in The New York Times Magazine[1], New York, N.Y.: The New York Times Company, →ISSN, →OCLC, archived from the original on 18 March 2020:
- Euclid devised a simple, beautiful proof showing that there is an infinite number of primes. But what of the twin primes? As far as you go on the number line, will there always be another set of twins?
Usage notes
- 2 and 3 are not generally considered to be twin primes, although they appear in a cluster, since 2 is the only even prime number so two consecutive prime numbers cannot differ by 1.
