ufred

Norwegian Nynorsk

Etymology

From u- +‎ fred, or possibly inherited directly from Old Norse úfriðr.

Compare to English fray ("conflict, quarrel, heated argument,") which derives by aphesis from affray—an Old French loan—ultimately equivalent to a compound of French é- ("out, away from, de-") + Frankish *friþu (peace, sanctuary), thus an equivalent formation to Old English unfriþ or to ufred.

Noun

ufred m (definite singular ufreden, indefinite plural ufredar, definite plural ufredane)

  1. war, weaponized conflict
  2. disagreement, division, unfriendliness
  3. disturbance
  4. (folklore) attacks from a wight
  5. lack of inner peace
