ufred
Norwegian Nynorsk
Etymology
From u- + fred, or possibly inherited directly from Old Norse úfriðr.
Compare to English fray ("conflict, quarrel, heated argument,") which derives by aphesis from affray—an Old French loan—ultimately equivalent to a compound of French é- ("out, away from, de-") + Frankish *friþu (“peace, sanctuary”), thus an equivalent formation to Old English unfriþ or to ufred.
Noun
ufred m (definite singular ufreden, indefinite plural ufredar, definite plural ufredane)
- war, weaponized conflict
- disagreement, division, unfriendliness
- disturbance
- (folklore) attacks from a wight
- lack of inner peace
