Etymology
Borrowed from Armenian Ստեփանակերտ (Stepʻanakert). By the decree of the Central Executive Committee of the Azerbaijan SSR of August 10, 1923, the village of Khankendi was renamed the city of Stepanakert in honor of the head of the Baku Commune Stepan Shahumyan. First attested in the August 10, 1923.
