Etymology

Probably borrowed from Egyptian mḏḥ (“girdle, fillet”). Compare Akkadian mēzaḫum, mēzeḫum, māzaḫum (“sash”).

According to Klein, related to Arabic حِزَام (ḥizām, “girdle, waistband”).
