Etymology
Semi-learned borrowing from Classical Syriac ܣܲܘܟܲܬ݂ ܫܲܘܦܵܐ (sawkaṯ šawpā, literally “twig of friction”) as a substitute for the common Russian loanword ܟ̰ܘܼܬܩܵܐ (čutqā); cognate of Arabic شَوْكَة (šawka) and Hebrew שׂוֹכָה (sokhá). Doublet of ܟܲܘܣܵܐ (kawsā, “hair”).
