Etymology
From göt (“Geat”) + borg (“fortified castle or city”).
Possibly influenced by an earlier nearby settlement, Nya Lödöse (1473–1624), which was referred to as Gøthæholm in its charter. Earlier thought to be named after the local river Göta älv. However, since both cities were founded as a government initiative, Göteborg may instead be named after the historical regional tribe the Götar (Geats), from which the names Göta älv and Götaland are also derived. First attested in 1605 as Giötheborgh.[1]
