Etymology

From Latin pardus (pard; male leopard) +‎ Latin -ōsa (adjectival suffix, feminine nominalized). Modelled similarly to Lycosa, the type genus of wolf spiders. Coined by German entomologist and arachnologist Carl Ludwig Koch in 1847.
