    Uncertain, with multiple theories:

    • Schleicher proposes the compound *kʷar (sun) +‎ *t͡ʃɨ (mother).[1]
    • Nikulin proposes a derivation from Proto-Tupian *ŋkʷat with an unexplained *-at͡ʃɨ suffix.[2]
    • Navarro hypothesizes a compound of (this) +‎ 'ara (day) +‎ sy (origin) (*ko +‎ *ʔar +‎ *t͡ʃɨ) for the Old Tupi descendant.[3]
