Etymology

Şemseddin Sâmi proposes a derivation from *āg- (to rise) +‎ *-ïr, whence Turkish ağmak (to descend; rise, move up). However loss of long vowel is problematic. See potential cognates *agrïg (pain, ache), dialectal Turkish ağdık (oblique; heavy).
