By surface analysis, Ancient Greek θήρᾱ (thḗrā, “hunting, a hunt or chase”) +‎ Ancient Greek φώς (phṓs, “man”) +‎ -a f. Compare English huntsman. Coined by Swedish arachnologist Tamerlan Thorell in 1870.
