By surface analysis, Ancient Greek θήρᾱ (thḗrā, hunting, a hunt or chase) +‎ Ancient Greek φώς (phṓs, man) +‎ -a f. Compare English huntsman. Coined by Swedish arachnologist Tamerlan Thorell in 1870.
