birdeater
English
Alternative forms
- bird-eater, bird eater
Etymology
By surface analysis, bird + eater. Compare translingual Avicularia.
Noun
birdeater (plural birdeaters)
- (literally, rare) Anything which eats birds.
- Any of certain large tarantulas which occasionally (though very rarely) eat hummingbirds, especially of the genera Avicularia and Theraphosa, the latter of which contains the Goliath birdeater (Theraphosa blondi).
Usage notes
- Though not technically a misnomer, such spiders feed on birds very infrequently. They instead tend to prefer invertebrates or small terrestrial or arboreal vertebrates such as frogs.
