Etymology

From Proto-East Cushitic *waaḳ ("sky god"). Cognate with Somali Waaq.

Folk Etymology derives it from waan (“thing”) +‎ haqa (“true, justice”), literally “one true thing”, in Gada system or Wakeffata religion.
