Etymology

Inherited from Proto-Berber *svlm–ay (fish)[1]. According to Alexander Militarev, it is likely the source of Latin salmo (salmon).

Cognates include Tuareg asûlmey (fish), Kabyle aslm (fish), Zenaga siǯm (fish), Guanche salema (black seabream), and possibly Egyptian nšmw.t (kind of fish).
