Etymology

Sino-Vietnamese word from 形學, composed of 形 (“shape”) and 學 (“study”).

Coined by Hoàng Xuân Hãn in Danh-từ Khoa-học (Vocabulaire Scientifique, 1942):

Nếu chữ họ dùng đối với ta khó nhớ vì không có gốc dễ hiểu, tôi đổi lại cho hợp với cách hiểu của ta hơn. Ví-dụ tiếng kỷ-hà là géométrie, tôi đổi lại hình-học, tiếng tọa-tiêu là coordonnée tôi đổi lại là tọa-độ.

If the words that they use [in Chinese] are difficult to memorize for us because of unfamiliar roots, I will swap them for something that we can understand more readily. For example, I will swap the word 幾何 (kỷ-hà), which means "geometry", for hình-học; the word 坐標 (tọa-tiêu), which means "coordinate", for tọa-độ.
