From earlier iye-ta, from Proto-Somaloid *ʔice, from Proto-Cushitic *ʔisi (she, her), from Proto-Afroasiatic *si (she, he, it). Cognate with Rendille iche, Aweer ii, Oromo ishee, Afar is, Sidamo ise.
