lemlacht
Old Irish
Alternative forms
- lemnacht (with dissimilation)
Etymology
A compound that contains what would become Middle Irish lem (“weak, soft”) as its first element.
DIL's identification of the second element as what would become Middle Irish lacht (“milk”) cannot be correct, as the compound is also found in Breton livrizh and Welsh llefrith (“milk”); -i- in Brittonic cannot be derived from *-axt- in any fashion.
The only option that properly phonetically connects the Brittonic and Irish words is to reconstruct Proto-Celtic *lemomlixtus.
