Uncertain. Perhaps from Proto-Indo-European *téwH-e- or *tewH-ti, from the root *tewH-. Alternatively, the term could derive from the root *tewh₂-. Phonologically, the term could be explained from Proto-Italic *tū(w)V-, *tewV-, and *towV-.
