Inherited from Magadhi Prakrit 𑀣𑀸𑀫 ~ *𑀞𑀸𑀫 (thāma ~ *ṭhāma), from Sanskrit স্থামন্ (sthāman). Cognate with Assamese ঠাই (thai), Maithili ठाम (ṭhām), Bhojpuri 𑂘𑂰𑂀𑂫 / ठाँव (ṭhā̃v), Romani than. Doublet of স্থান (sthan) and -স্তান (-stan). Related to থুয়া (thuẏa), থান (than), থাকা (thaka), থালা (thala) and ঠিক (ṭhik).
