Etymology

Inherited from Magadhi Prakrit *𑀞𑀺𑀅𑀓𑁆𑀓 ~ *𑀞𑀻𑀓𑁆𑀓 (*ṭhiakka ~ *ṭhīkka), from Ashokan Prakrit 𑀣𑀺𑀅 ~ *𑀞𑀺𑀅 (thia ~ *ṭhia) + Middle Indo-Aryan -𑀓𑁆𑀓- (-kka-), from Sanskrit स्थित (sthita, situated; firm). Doublet of স্থান (sthan) and -স্তান (-stan). Related to থুয়া (thuẏa), থান (than), থাকা (thaka), থালা (thala) and ঠাঁই (ṭhãi).

Cognate with Assamese ঠিক (thik), Odia ଠିକ (ṭhika), Hindustani ٹھیک / ठीक (ṭhīk), Gujarati ઠીક (ṭhīk), Sindhi ٺيِڪُ / ठीकु, Marathi ठीक (ṭhīk), Punjabi ٹِھیک / ਠੀਕ (ṭhīk).
