Etymology

From merèntèt (streak) +‎ mula (first). According to C. D. Grijns, so named after the fact that it comes up in a series of lengthy and difficult to pronounce Arabic month names with no popular shortforms (namely, those of the 5th and 6th months, sometimes also the 4th month).[1]

Pronunciation

  • (Urban Jakarta) IPA(key): [mə.rɛnˈtɛt muˈlɛ]
    • Audio:(file)

Proper noun

Merèntèt Mula (Arab Gundul spelling مرنتت مولا)

  1. (Urban Jakarta) synonym of Jumadilawal (Jumada I, the fifth month of the Islamic calendar)
  2. (Urban Jakarta) synonym of Seri Mulud (Rabi II, the fourth month of the Islamic calendar)

Usage notes

In places where it is used for the fifth month ("Jumada I"), it comes right before Merèntèt Pengabisan (Jumada II, the sixth month, literally last streak). In places where it is used for the fourth month ("Rabi II"), it is followed by Merèntèt Tengah (Jumada I, the fifth month, literally middle streak), then Merèntèt Pengabisan.
